Encrypted Messaging

  • Regular texts (not iMessage) and calls are very, very easy for hackers and governments to see.
    • This video explains how easy and invasive these attacks are: Video About Cellular Network Attacks
    • If possible, avoid texting, and use Signal only. Ideally, use Signal for calls as well to others who have Signal.
    • Signal is currently the only widely used messenger we can recommend.
  • Do not use supposedly "encrypted" messengers like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. These are not truly encrypted and the companies can read your data.
    • WhatsApp has a bug that allows hackers and governments to send a virus to your phone via a "silent message" (you will not know this happened) that will give them access to your entire phone.
    • NOTE: They (Meta/Facebook) know about the vulnerability and choose not to fix it, so this is a purposeful decision on their part. They do not care about your privacy, in fact they care deeply about you not having privacy.
  • Telegram is also not a good option for a variety of reasons. This is a more detailed conversation, but please just trust us and avoid it if you can.
  • Chats within Discord (and most other social platforms) are not encrypted. Many people who work at Discord, and anyone else with decent hacking skills can read your messages.
